When it came time to begin work on the seventh album, Gourley thought long and hard about the next move and kept coming back to one concept: The most satisfying work is collaborative work. From building houses with his father in Alaska to building a devoted fanbase, he had sought partnerships. So he took a bold step - bold for a proven band, bolder still for its uncertainty of sound - a step up to the apartment of a possible collaborator, Danger Mouse.
Portugal. The Man found the opportunity to work with Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton so important that they scrapped two weeks of recording -- and eight of ten new songs -- in order to start fresh. Changing studio locations from El Paso to Danger Mouse's headquarters in L.A., the collaboration has resulted in the band's most accessible and "mainstream" recording to date.

Grinning Streak is the eleventh studio album by Barenaked Ladies (the tenth, if Barenaked Ladies Are Me and Are Men are considered as one double-album). The album was released on June 4, 2013 on Vanguard Records. It is the band's first album on Vanguard. The album is the band's second studio album since the departure of founding member Steven Page in February 2009. The album was recorded from February to April 2013 in separate sessions with Howie Beck, Gavin Brown, and possibly other producers (including Mark Endert and Greg Wells whose names were mentioned by the band as potentially working on the album). The first single, "Boomerang" was recorded in a separate session produced by Brown in May 2012, initially for release that summer.
